RE: Registrations now open!
Alright, I've registered a workshop for Friday. 3 hours because I hope to introduce both Python and Pygame. This should be interesting.

So, how is webstreaming going to work for workshops?

If you can desktop cam (Whether using LiveStream ProCaster or whatever home tools you have) and have a microphone and will most definitely be available at that time, I can give you broadcaster privileges and you should be good to go.

When writing this, I realized that I will most definitely not be available on Friday, so I changed it to Wednesday.

I have a microphone (well, a webcam with a built-in microphone, but I can't do better at the moment) and I will most definitely be available at the new time unless a tornado comes in and tears the house down, but I don't have any programs that can do what you call "desktop cam"ing, just desktop recorders (recordMyDesktop, RecordItNow, and Istanbul; I'm not aware of any streaming functionality in any of these programs). Does anyone know of one of a program that can "desktop cam" that works (natively, no Wine) on GNU/Linux? I can use Windows as a last resort, but it's a pretty big inconvenience and I'd also prefer not to for personal reasons.

VLC might have the capability. A quick google search gives me this http://grok.lsu.edu/article.aspx?articleid=14625

Can't really test it at the moment, but it'll be worth looking into I'm sure

Well, that is not the program I expected that from.

Now the question is, how do I test it?

EDIT: Well, I think I've figured out how to test it, and it seems to me like Livestream only allows you to use their proprietary Windows-and-Mac-only program that they give away.

Any way I could use a different service (assuming I can figure out how to use one of them)?

Make your own (dummy) channel on Livestream and have a witness help you out, I'd propose.

I did that, and I'm not seeing any option to use anything other than the proprietary Windows-and-Mac-only program they give away. Is there any way I could use a different service? (I'm currently exploring Ustream, Twitch.tv, and Justin.tv to see if any of them will work.)

EDIT: Well, either Ustream uses some proprietary program like Flash, or it's just confusing. Either way, it's not going to be any help.

Does any of this help you?

Unfortunately, regardless of whether it's Livestream, UStream or Justin.tv, these things are a real pain on Linux platforms.

EDIT: Maybe something here is helpful too"

RE: Registrations now open!
The first link seems to only give information specific to those programs, I don't see anything useful to me. (EDIT: maybe that address mentioned in the first one might be useful)

The big problem is if it's possible, I don't know where to stream to. There's no mention of an IceCast server, an address for UDP, or anything, as far as I can tell. It just tells you to download their program.

EDIT: Actually, I don't see how to even create a live video "post"...

If it's like Flash Live Media Encoder, the address would look something like what's on this page;

http://www.livestream.com/userguide/inde...Livestream

So it'd look something like
"rtmp://publish.livestream.com/mogulus/ncfc2011/username=yourusername
/password=yourpassword/isAutoLive=true"

Also, maybe this FFMPEG guide might be helpful:

Like I said in the edit of my last post, I just realized that I don't even see how to start streaming on LiveStream, when I say I want to make a live video "post" it just directs me to either paring a broadcaster or downloading their program (Windows, Mac, or iPhone).

I'm not entirely sure what you're asking, then.

I've used FLME and I connect to the rtmp URL (with proper connection info) and then start streaming. If that doesn't work with the applications you have than it probably just plain wouldn't work. :(

How do you make the channel, though?

Livestream channels are made on Livestream's site but they don't really involve using the Procaster apps or anything, IIRC - you just jot down info in html and there it is.

If you're referring to NCFC specifically: the channel is ncfc2011. Since we're not online yet you could theoretically do your testing on there.

If you don't want to make a Livestream account, I suppose I could try making a "generic" account specifically for anyone with difficulties making Livestream accounts.

I created an account, no problem, but I don't get how you start a channel. Unless I'm thinking too hard and channels are created like with IRC (just connect to a nonexisting channel and it gets created)?

So... there's two separate Livestream websites.

Well, either I did something wrong when I tried just now or VLC isn't going to work.

Ugh..... my computer died out on me before I could basically do anything for my booth. And there's only a day left. What a disaster. :/

Shoot, if there's only a day left, then I'm running out of time on doing skits. I think I'll just do one for promoting Satellablog and that'll be my last. :(

Well, rather than going through figuring out how to livestream on Windows, I think I'd rather just use text chat for comments, and show the code using an external service. I've changed my workshop to a chatroom one.

Does anyone know of a service kind of like PasteBin, but that allows live edits? Your World Of Text will work OK, so I guess I'll use that if not (and post the code on PasteBin periodically), but something more like a text editor, maybe that offers syntax highlighting, would be better.
